I’ve got some gorgeous villas at Como, Maggiore, and Orta. I sometimes ask myself: which one would I myself stay in for a week or two?
My choice is Casina del Lago, a cottage in a truly magical position right on the shore of Lago Maggiore. I’d walk to the village to do my shopping or to have lunch in one of the simpler lakeside trattorie. I’d take the train in to Milan for a day. I’d take the boat up to the Borromean islands. I’d go over to Lake Orta. I’d hike up the mountain between Maggiore and Orta. And most of all, I’d park myself in the garden and reread Manzoni, whose un-put-downable I Promessi Sposi (“The Betrothed”) is set right here in the lake area.
